The letter in digital life
The still letter becomes an icon
Digital experiments open a new field in Mahmood Al Abadi's relationship with the letter. Knowledge begins with the hand and the composition, then the image develops to respond to different screens and to everyday use.
In the collaboration with Huawei, the distribution of letters, colour and space is reconsidered to suit the face of a phone or a watch. The image sits beside the time, the icons and the device's functions, and art comes closer to a user who meets it every day.
From meaning to image
The Sailing Ship
The design starts from a poetic image linked to steadfastness in customs and principles, giving it a form that evokes a ship.
The Falcon
Inspired by Sheikh Zayed's words on youth and their responsibility towards the future, it translates the meaning into an image of focus and clarity of vision.
Mars
The planet's form is built from layered Arabic letters, in a work celebrating the UAE's arrival at Mars and bringing language together with an image of the scientific future.
From independent experiment to application
The works for the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre reveal a path parallel to the Huawei collaboration, combining calligraphic composition with a watch face and gifts, and connecting language with the image of the city and everyday use.
Exchanging knowledge
The project was accompanied by participation in conferences and cultural dialogues. In China in 2023, Mahmood Al Abadi led a cultural-exchange workshop in Arabic calligraphy, during which he experimented with Chinese tools to write the Arabic letter.
